Martial Arts for the Vertically Challenged

Posted by Vicki on 3/14/2011 to Ask Joe
Dear Karate Joe,
I’m a 4’9” mother of 2. I’ve always been interested in taking martial arts but because of my height – I’m hesitant to spar with larger opponents.  What martial arts would you recommend for my small stature?
Sincerely,  Vertically Challenged Vicki

Sweetheart, dynamite comes in small packages. Martial arts are designed to help a smaller opponent defend against a larger one. You just need to figure out what works for you.  One option is to find an instructor that offers karate or taekwondo classes without the contact sparring-  It's still a great workout and very common these days.  Or if you are interested in the contact aspect of it, your instructor will help you modify your technique.  Instead of trying to kick some dude in the head, you can kick him in the backside. That’s a lot easier shot and you’ll love their reaction.  I think you should check out several  martial art schools and see which style you personally like best.
